I agree with not showing off while breastfeeding. I have breastfed all 4 of my children and have always tried to be discreet. I have never done it in meetings where men are present at church but that has more to do with me not being comfortable breastfeeding while rubbing elbows with high priests.
That being said, if my husband was not with me during sacrament meeting and I had to go feed my baby, I would feel uncomfortable leaving my other children alone in sacrament meeting for a long period. And having to drag them all with me into the bathroom seems silly. In that case, I would be mightily tempted to breastfeed in the meeting. I also think that a strategically chosen pew and a decent cover and wardrobe choice would make all concerns about being inappropriate moot. No one need see anything. However, I would not feed my baby while conducting anything. That’s special time to bond with my child, chat with other moms in the mother’s lounge and otherwise skip out on those long hot Sunday School lessons with an awesome excuse to boot.
Also, I have to say that even having a slightly more ample bosom than your average mom, I manage to cover up and feed in public without showing much, if anything. I often envy moms who can buy those special nursing tops without having their assests peek out of the flaps. That would make it all much easier. Take advantage sisters and do your part to help everyone feel less awkward. We all know you’re breastfeeding, we don’t need to see what you do it with especially not at in a meeting where we are supposed to be focussing on Christ.
Just in case you wanted to know, I hold men to a similar standard. Read my blog about that here:http://itsmyblogthatswhy.blogspot.ca/
All time greatest guest on The Cultural Hall, Sistas in Zion, also blogged about this.
They said it was a sister serving in YM breastfeeding in the back of the room and she was asked to stop because it made the youth feel uncomfortable. A lot of the comments were the same we all hear. (Why is my problem if you feel uncomfortable with with natural function of my body)
I said Whats if, as a man, I were to do the same thing on a scout hike because I had to pee. What is so immodest about emptying my bladder in front of the young men? I shouldn’t have to turn away or go behind a tree. It is a natural bodily function right? God made my body this way so you should just except it. I
From a man’s point of view that is just crazy, and a good way to get registered on MegansLaw.gov.
Also, is there a link to the MCO America story? I am a member of the OCMCO and would love to share it!
