lds twitter website love thingIn its continued effort to reach into social media spaces, the church’s official website, LDS.org, has a page featured on its front page which is composed entirely of recent tweets and enormous pictures.

The official twitter account of the church, @LDSchurch began the #GodsLove campaign on February 6.  The account would post a photo, such as a sunset, and ask “How does a peaceful sunset help you feel #GodsLove? Let us know.”  Six photos were shared and questions asked. The web page includes high resolution versions of each of these photos and three select tweets on each subject.

The web page also invites visitors to embrace the #GodsLove hashtag and share their own experiences in feeling God’s Love.

I’m going to pause here to say that if I had known my twitter account and interaction might have ended up on lds.org, I totally would have tweeted about #GodsLove.

#famousbyassociation.

I don’t really care for the layout of the page, personally. It’s just too big. I don’t like all the scrolling and the way the twitter plug-ins are all aligned to the left while the images take up the full space. It was a little jarring. However, I’m excited to see the church really push into the social media sphere. I think it’s great that they posted real users’ tweets, along with links to follow them. Even though the official twitter account doesn’t follow any non-official twitter accounts, it’s nice to know that interactions are actually seen by somebody.

Indeed, if there’s one message the lds.org team needs to hear, it’s that interaction is the key to success with social media. For months they’ve been endlessly posting and sharing and pushing content out, but rarely responding, interacting, or even behaving like there’s a human behind the keyboard.

Hopefully this Valentines Day website is a small sign in the thawing of the ice between the somewhat corporate lds.org face, and the very human membership that wants so badly to connect with their leaders.

Who knows, maybe soon we’ll see @PresMonson actually taking a few minutes behind the keyboard for @PresMonson.
